One of the biggest struggles with managing a remote workforce is fostering a sense of connection and camaraderie. Yet, getting it right can benefit you as much as your team.
People stick with jobs where they feel valued, enjoy working with their colleagues, and are invested in helping the company succeed. And teams that feel connected, respected, and understood are the ones that consistently deliver the best outcomes for clients.
So, how do you develop a tightly knit and happy team if your staff are spread out across the country and rarely see each other face-to-face? How do you encourage a positive, productive, and healthy work culture in the digital workspace?
At Solutions, we understand the struggle and have worked hard to create an environment where our team (no matter how far apart they might be) feel:
- Connected, not isolated
- Respected, not undervalued
- Understood, not forgotten.
We achieve this through a mix of the right tools and human connection. Tools such as Microsoft Teams, Sage HR, Zoho CRM, and Monday help our team communicate effectively, manage tasks, and create a collaborative digital office environment. That means your projects stay on track, your questions get answered quickly, and your business benefits from a team that’s aligned and engaged.
Even across 70+ individuals, we make sure every contribution is recognised, from celebrating long-serving staff to rewarding exceptional effort. Because when employees feel seen and appreciated, they’re more motivated to go the extra mile for your business.

Technology helps, but nothing replaces real face-to-face interactions.
That’s why our team meets up once a quarter for a staff meal, where they can put names to faces and get to know each other better, followed by a whole company meeting that ensures everyone stays informed and on the right path.
It all builds towards our annual staff weekend away in which we invite our staff and their partners for an all-expenses paid mystery weekend — a chance to laugh, let their hair down, and hopefully bond.
Read on to learn about this year’s trip and why we think it plays a key part in helping us maintain a strong, interconnected team that’s ready to deliver for our customers on a daily basis.
Black tie, bags packed, destination unknown — bonding is vital to a team’s success
Bright and early on a Saturday morning, our team gathered outside our Mercia Marina offices having travelled from various parts of the country. The only instructions: pack a black-tie outfit, get to the coach on time, and enjoy the weekend. From the start, the mystery added excitement and encouraged team building, fuelled by coffee, energy drinks, and plenty of laughs.
The journey included a quiz on the coach, wild guesses about the destination, and plenty of friendly banter. Eventually, our hosts revealed that our first stop was a hotel on the outskirts of Hull, where a buffet lunch kicked off the outdoor activities.
Friendly competition was on the agenda, with teams taking part in:
- Archery
- Axe throwing
- Remote control truck racing
- Laser clay pigeon shooting.
Our directors, Will and Nicola, showed off their competitive nature, riling other teams up as they tried to push their teams in the words of a very popular children’s TV show: “to be the very best, like no one ever was”. The marketing team’s Rob revealed he was secretly a descendant of Robin Hood with his ace archery skills. Several close calls occurred at the axe throwing event.
After a break to refresh, we headed to The Deep, Hull’s historic aquarium, for a black-tie dinner. Dining beside the central tank, with a live band and a magical setting, was an experience most people never get, and one that created memories and connections that last.
The weekend wrapped with a relaxed Sunday: a late start, lunch at Hull Market, a casual scavenger hunt, and a cosy pub dinner on the way home.
The goal was achieved, building bonds across a diverse and geographically dispersed team. And for your business, that means working with a team that’s cohesive, motivated, and ready to deliver.
